Allen Bradley PLC
Systems & Fault-Finding
A practical one-day workshop for maintenance engineers who need to diagnose faults on Rockwell Automation systems — with more confidence, more clarity and less guesswork.
Full-day workshop
Rochester, Kent
Hands-on throughout
This workshop is designed for maintenance engineers, automation technicians and senior operators who work with Allen Bradley control systems and need to diagnose faults more methodically. It is aimed at teams who want to move beyond alarm-spotting and instead understand what the system is actually doing — and where to look when something goes wrong.
The course is built around the Rockwell Automation ecosystem: Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000, ControlLogix and CompactLogix hardware, and the EtherNet/IP network architecture. All training is hands-on and focused on real-world troubleshooting rather than passive theory. Content can be tailored to your specific plant and systems.

Workshop outcomes
Hardware & system architecture
How Allen Bradley hardware is structured — the relationship between the chassis, power supply, CPU and I/O modules across ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms
What the status and fault LEDs mean across different 1756 and 1769 series modules, and how to use them as the first step in fault diagnosis
How to read and interpret a hardware configuration in Studio 5000 and understand how the system is physically built
How to identify a faulty module, carry out the correct isolation procedure, and replace it safely without disrupting other parts of the system
CPU behaviour & project management
What task types mean in Studio 5000 — continuous, periodic and event tasks — and how scan behaviour affects system response and fault diagnosis
How to check whether forces or overrides are active on I/O, what the implications are, and how to manage them safely
How to understand controller modes (Run, Program, Remote Run, Fault) and the correct steps to take in each
How to open the correct project in Studio 5000, understand firmware compatibility and manage the difference between offline and online modes
Online diagnostics & software fault-finding
How to interrogate the controller fault log and the major/minor fault tables — what fault codes mean and which require a clear-faults procedure
How to monitor ladder logic and function block diagrams online, trace rung continuity and identify exactly where logic is not completing
How to use Studio 5000 cross-reference tools, go-to references and tag search to navigate an unfamiliar programme quickly
How to use tags, aliases and descriptors to understand what each part of the programme is doing without prior knowledge of the project
Network fault-finding (EtherNet/IP & legacy)
How EtherNet/IP works as a control network and how to approach communication faults — connection timeouts, module inhibit and I/O not owned
How DeviceNet and ControlNet behave differently from EtherNet/IP, and what fault indicators to look for on legacy network installations
How to use RSLinx Classic to browse the network, identify devices and diagnose connection problems
How to interpret the connection status of remote I/O and distributed racks, and what steps to take when communication is lost
