We were recently called in to resolve a lighting issue on the mezzanine floor of a facility. Several baton lights on the lower mezzanine floor had stopped working, and a photocell light on the upper floor near the bin lift had also been out of action for some time.

Our Approach:

Upon assessing the situation, our team discovered that previous installations had used SY 4 core cable for design and installation – not the best choice for this setup. Additionally, some of the baton lights contained motion detector devices, requiring precise wiring to enable their movement-based functionality. Despite the less-than-ideal starting point, we methodically replaced and rewired the baton lights and installed the new photocell light.

Challenges:

The biggest hurdle we faced was the weather. The rain was relentless, and the mezzanine area itself was exposed to the elements, with water pouring through, making the working environment quite difficult. Several junction boxes had also been filled with water due to poor prior installation, which added to the complexity.

We also encountered a hazardous situation with a live cable hanging loose from the lighting circuit, which had been left by the previous installer. We safely isolated and disconnected this before completing the job, ensuring everything was secure and safe for the future.

The Outcome:

Despite the challenges, the installation was completed successfully, with new baton lights on the lower mezzanine floor and the repaired photocell light on the upper floor fully operational. The lights now provide reliable, motion-activated illumination, improving safety and functionality for the facility’s employees.
